Several years later, John's grief has somewhat subsided, but he remains marked by the tragedy. He lives his life in a daze, constantly sensing a presence.

One night, while traveling from Washington to Richmond for an assignment, he gets lost and ends up on a deserted country road. When his car inexplicably breaks down, he walks to the nearest house. Not only is he threatened by the owner with a shotgun, but the man also states, "I've been waiting for you."

Shaken, John encounters Police Officer Connie Parker (Laura Linney), who apologizes for the aggressive reception. She explains that the entire region is on edge due to a series of mysterious incidents. It then dawns on John that he is in Point Pleasant, about 600 kilometers from where he thought he was. It feels completely wrong. How did this happen?

John's curiosity is piqued, and he decides to stay in Point Pleasant to investigate the town's inexplicable phenomena. He soon discovers that there is likely a connection between these events and the strange drawings Mary made just hours before her death. But what exactly is the connection?

The events defy simple explanation and, more disturbingly, seem to foreshadow upcoming disasters like plane crashes and earthquakes.

The deeper John delves into the case, the more he doubts his own sanity. Are unknown forces behind the many sightings? What kind of accidents are lurking for the inhabitants of Point Pleasant? For John, it becomes a race against time to find out what is about to happen and then prevent it.

The film's plot is based on the book "The Mothman Prophecies," written by journalist John A. Keel (born 1930) and published in 1975. Keel investigated a wide range of mysterious observations in the Point Pleasant area in 1966-67. "Mothman - Mørkets Budbringer" borrows from the most dramatic events of the real-life mystery, weaving them together into a hair-raising story. It is described as two hours of suspense and chills, a treat for fans of "The X-Files." The film is not recommended for those prone to hearing voices, believing in omens, or feeling persecuted by alien beings.
