Magazine Overview

This document is the "BULLETIN ANNUEL N° 4" from SCEAU (Sauvegarde, Conservation des Etudes et Archives Ufologiques), published in 1996. The cover features a stylized outline of France filled with bookshelves, symbolizing the organization's mission of archiving and preserving ufological knowledge. The bulletin is distributed free to active members and potential associates, with a public price of FRF 30.00 for non-members. The editorial team includes Raoul ROBE, Thierry PINVIDIC, Gilles MUNSCH, and Gilles DURAND.

Editorial: "ET DE QUATRE !"

The editorial, dated October 1997 and signed by Gilles MUNSCH & Thierry PINVIDIC, begins with an apology for the delay in publishing the 1996 activity report, attributing it to the challenges of volunteer-run organizations. It highlights the growing esteem for SCEAU due to its ecumenical approach, which does not privilege any particular ufological group. The organization's commitment is to conserve and secure all ufological documentation, making it accessible within legal and donor-defined limits. The editorial addresses criticisms of SCEAU aiming for 'heritage capture,' asserting that the project is unifying and has received positive reception from archival administrations, aligning with the vital mission of heritage conservation.

It emphasizes that SCEAU's success stems from its strategy of leaving traces that can be exploited later, a process requiring abnegation. The editorial then shifts to the practicalities of SCEAU's 1996 activities and trends for 1997/98. The current phase is described as 'pivotal and particularly difficult,' with the mission exceeding available human and financial resources. Bulletin N° 5 is announced to detail fundraising efforts, including applications for grants and participation in a global business spirit competition. The bulletin will also cover the acquisition of equipment like scanners and CD-ROM burners.

The editorial mentions ongoing collaborations with researchers, including a Professor Emeritus from the Collège de France. It details agreements with the Archives Départementales de Moselle and the Médiathèque du Pontiffroy in Metz for depositing the CNEGU/Nord-Est France archives and the ufological library, respectively. Future bulletins will elaborate on successful initiatives and the organization's efforts to overcome current challenges.

SCEAU reiterates its offer to safeguard ufological heritage, citing the proven effectiveness of the Archives de France in heritage preservation. The organization currently manages numerous cession contracts, deposit contracts with national and departmental archives, and has sent out hundreds of questionnaires to ufologists. New services like 'Le Troc' are introduced. The editorial concludes by celebrating the publication of the fourth annual bulletin and thanking supporters.

Bilans d'Activités 1996

January

January was dedicated to finalizing the bulletin, including corrections, reorganization, and modifications to the table of contents. Gilles MUNSCH and Gilles DURAND worked on a document titled "organigramme des phases de traitement d'un fonds d'archives ufologiques" for the Archives Départementales. Meetings were held in Paris and Montrouge to update the ufological address directory, which then contained over 1500 entries. A significant disappointment occurred when Mr. ROBIN withdrew from a contract to transfer his archives, despite prior agreement.

February

February involved continuing work on the bulletin's layout and updating the address directory. Gilles DURAND prepared for the General Assembly and worked on the "press clippings" file of Mme AMBROISE. SCEAU was contacted by France Télévision for a TV show, but declined due to the show's apparent interest in sensationalism rather than genuine research. A technical issue with the Minitel OVNITEL server was identified, causing 'parasitic' BAL entries. The printing of Bulletin N° 3 began.

March

Following an interview with Thierry PINVIDIC for an ARTE program, the president discussed SCEAU with the program's director, Jacques BAYNAC, exploring the possibility of salvaging broadcast rushes. The General Assembly was held in Villars-Santenoge, addressing points such as the transfer of assets and archives from the dissolved association CVLDLN, follow-ups with the Archives Départementales, the creation of a thematic library, and the 'Troc' project. New members joined, and an outline of Bulletin N° 3 was distributed. Contact was made with ufologist Jean Christophe VEVE regarding the Trans-en-Provence case.

April

Starting April 10th, Gilles DURAND initiated a campaign to follow up with the Archives Départementales (AD), creating templates for contracts and information packets. A working meeting took place in Paris. Gilles MUNSCH worked on updating the ufological thematic library listing. The first edition of Bulletin N° 3 faced significant printing and assembly problems, causing delays. Documents from a former member of CVLDLN were received. A meeting in Paris led to obtaining the signature of Jacques SCORNAUX on his contract. Gilles MUNSCH also developed a revised version of the archive cession contract.

May

Gilles DURAND received funds for sending bulletins and AD correspondence. However, his involvement was temporarily hindered by professional commitments. Pierre LAGRANGE was contacted for a radio interview on Radio J, but it did not materialize. The bulletin highlights the precision of SCEAU's inventories and mentions Jacques VALLEE's interest in receiving a complete collection of the revue, noting that the issue of safeguarding ufological archives is as sensitive in the USA as in France. Raoul ROBE submitted a document on "Autogestion d'un fonds d'archives" for testing by members.

June

Gilles MUNSCH visited the AD des Vosges but found the conservator absent, leading to increased skepticism about a contract. Hopes were placed on other regional archives. Gilles DURAND worked on reconstituting the budget for photocopying bulletin N° 3. Thierry PINVIDIC was contacted regarding the archives of Jean Claude PECKER, an astrophysicist whose extensive documentation (including OVNI observation letters) might be placed with the Bibliothèque du Collège de France, potentially forming a Parisian thematic library on ufology and parasciences, with SCEAU's assistance.

July

A working meeting at the Carrousel du Louvre focused on AD follow-ups and the creation of a color maquette for the 'organigramme.' Discussions included the BAYNAC, VEVE, and PECKER files and the delay in Bulletin N° 3's publication. Gilles DURAND prepared correspondence for the AD and a note to members explaining the delay. Mme AMBROISE received an early copy of the bulletin. July was a holiday period for many members, with some traveling to Balaton. Gilles DURAND used his vacation time to prepare AD dossiers and mailings.

August

Gilles DURAND sent out information notes and studied a project to create departmental maps of ufological associations active since 1947. He also posted initial mailings to priority ADs and participated in an ufological trip to Southern France, meeting with Raymond VEILLITH, the creator and editor of the LDLN revue. Responses from several ADs were received, and a draft contract for AD 86 was established. Further mailings to ADs were sent, and pages 108/109 of Bulletin N° 3 were reprinted for a "2nd edition."

September

Responses from ADs continued to arrive throughout September. Gilles DURAND worked on a new, correct printing of Bulletin SCEAU, producing "2nd" and "3rd editions." New correspondence was sent to ADs. A working meeting was held in Paris, attended by members and Jacques SCORNAUX and Michel MONNERIE. Raoul ROBE contacted Michel JEANTHEAU about press archives concerning the 1954 wave. Thierry ROCHER successfully tested the "Autogestion d'un fonds d'archives" project.

October

Correspondence from ADs continued to arrive. A phone call with the director of AD Vosges indicated pessimism about a deposit due to stringent conditions. An autumn meeting was held in Montrouge.

November

Gilles DURAND prepared dossiers for neophytes to encounter at the Lyon UFO conference. A response was received from AD 69. Due to the increasing volume of SCEAU's own archives, Gilles DURAND acquired additional binders and sleeves. A meeting focused on sorting and inventorying CIRU archives. Jean-Philippe DAIN presented his associative project. Raoul ROBE and Gilles MUNSCH met with Mme SKORKA, conservator of the Archives Départementales de Moselle, who agreed to accept the NORD-EST fonds under certain presentation conditions. There is also a possibility of depositing the thematic library at the Médiathèque du Pontiffroy in Metz. Efforts are underway to secure this, with support from local officials and organizations.

December

Significant energy was dedicated to completing the inventory of the CIRU fonds, which proved more challenging than anticipated. Gilles DURAND sorted cartons, while a team in Epinal handled the definitive sorting of the thematic library. A meeting at the Carrousel du Louvre discussed the potential for a thematic library at the Collège de France, combining Prof. PECKER's books and SCEAU's thematic library N° 2. Gilles DURAND prepared cartons for delivery to the AN, including documents from the AMBROISE and "Miscellanées SCEAU" fonds. A letter and draft contract were sent to Prof. PECKER. Two cartons of CIRU archives were delivered to the AN, along with "Miscellanées SCEAU" and AMBROISE fonds. The year concluded with the transfer of additional fonds to the AN.

The bulletin notes that the next report will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Kenneth ARNOLD's observation and the 'age of reason' for the association.

A photograph depicts a group scene from SCEAU, dated October 6, 1996, with identified members.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this bulletin are the preservation and archiving of ufological materials, the management and growth of the SCEAU association, and the ongoing efforts to collaborate with national and regional archival institutions. The editorial stance is one of dedication to the mission of safeguarding ufological heritage, acknowledging the challenges of volunteer work and resource limitations, while maintaining an inclusive and collaborative approach. The organization actively seeks partnerships and aims to make its collections accessible for research, emphasizing the importance of its work for future generations.

This issue of "LE SCEAU (MAL) VU DE L'EXTERIEUR" (The SCEAU (Badly) Seen from the Outside) is a press review focused on external perceptions and criticisms of the "Sauvegarde, Conservation et Etude des Archives Ufologiques" (SCEAU) association. The publication aims to present articles and citations concerning SCEAU, often highlighting negative commentary from other ufology groups. This particular issue delves into older articles, some dating back to 1991, to illustrate these critiques.

Editorial Stance and Introduction

The introduction acknowledges that the title is intentionally provocative, reflecting the critical nature of the articles presented. The editorial team states the section's purpose is to review press coverage, and that this first installment will focus on older articles, some of which are highly critical of SCEAU. They warn that they may need to be "particularly acerbic" in their responses to some associations and their representatives, asking for understanding.

Article 1: Extract from LUMIERES DANS LA NUIT, No. 307 (Jan-Feb 1991)

This section presents an excerpt from "LUMIÈRES DANS LA NUIT" which introduces SCEAU as an acronym for "Sauvegarde, Conservation et Etude des Archives Ufologiques" and provides contact information for Gilles Durand. The commentary from SCEAU expresses disappointment that only three French-language reviews (LDLN, Inforespace, and "La Ligne Bleue Survolée" from CVLDLN) relayed their presentation material. They note that LDLN gave minimal space, while SOBEPS provided comprehensive coverage, indicating intellectual honesty. CVLDLN, whose founders were involved in SCEAU's creation, published the entire brochure. The commentary also recounts a negative experience in 1995 when SOS OVNI refused to list SCEAU on their Minitel server, citing that SCEAU's profile did not match their criteria for an association of investigators, which was intended for potential witnesses seeking local groups. SCEAU questions this rationale, suggesting that SOS OVNI users are more likely to be young ufologists seeking information than witnesses.

Article 2: Extract from INFORESPACE, No. 82 (December 1991)

This extract from "INFORESPACE" emphasizes the need to act to safeguard ufological heritage due to dramatic losses and destruction of archives. It describes the creation of a specific structure, an association loi 1901 named "Sauvegarde Conservation des Etudes et Archives Ufologiques" (SCEAU/Archives OVNI), initiated by private researchers and representatives of ufology associations. The stated goals of SCEAU are to preserve private ufological heritage, archive public and private documentation, manage this fund openly and securely in liaison with national archives, and promote preventive measures for systematic safeguarding. Contact information for Gilles Durand at SCEAU-Archives OVNI is provided.

Article 3: Extract from A.M.A (CERPA), No. 5 (December 1992)

This excerpt from "A.M.A." titled "LA GRANDE MANIPULATION UFOLOGIQUE" (The Great Ufological Manipulation) by Guy Tarade, accuses French ufology groups of being infiltrated and manipulated for years. Tarade claims that conferences are organized to ridicule and oppose researchers, citing the "RENCONTRES DE LYON" as a prime example of "flagrant manipulation." He also casts doubt on the operation by the SCEAU group, suggesting it aimed to "recover" all ufological archives collected over the past half-century. The commentary from SCEAU strongly refutes this, calling it the "first attack in full" and questioning Tarade's sources. They dismiss his claims as "fadaises" (nonsense), asserting the intellectual honesty of their members. They refer to their own article, "La Sauvegarde du Patrimoine Ufologique," for further context.

Article 4: Extract from LES TEMPS FUTURS, No. 3 (Page 26)

This section continues the critique, with LES TEMPS FUTURS presenting new "specialists of disinformation." The article reiterates the accusation of manipulation and opposition to researchers. It highlights a response from René Faudrin published in A.M.A. (No. 7, December 1993) titled "Le Groupe SCEAU s'explique" (The SCEAU Group Explains Itself), with the subtitle "Mr Tarade, SCEAU is not a manipulation." The article also mentions an unpublished article by the former president of SCEAU, which reportedly stated, "There can be no archiving in ufology. Whoever possesses archives, entrust them to me and I will publish them!" The commentary in LES TEMPS FUTURS finds this proposition "ridiculous" and "implausible."

Article 5: Extract from LES TEMPS FUTURS, No. 4 (Page 47)

This excerpt features Robert Fischer, former vice-president of SCEAU, who left the organization. Fischer states he left when he saw the direction the group was taking and publicly denounced the actions of people who were also members of CNEGU and VECA. He accuses them of producing an "aberrant article" in "Sciences & Vie" magazine years ago and attempting to "take care of" his archives after his resignation. Fischer expresses high regard for René Faudrin, SCEAU's founding president, but laments his departure due to "extra-ufological problems." Fischer notes that since his departure, SCEAU's work meetings and idea debates have become much more serene and constructive, suggesting "to every misfortune, there is good."

Commentary on Robert Fischer's Departure

The commentary addresses Robert Fischer's departure, stating he left willingly and was "fâché" (angry), though the reasons are unclear. It recounts meeting him fifteen years prior when he was a member of GPUN. The commentary details Fischer's opposition to certain individuals within SCEAU, whom he allegedly considered his "têtes de turcs" (scapegoats). It claims his opposition often led to discussions being left to fester and work meetings being disrupted by "dirty laundry" sessions. The commentary also disputes Fischer's claim that SCEAU tried to take his archives, stating that the archives in question belonged to GPUN and that SCEAU had a signed letter authorizing their retrieval without any coercion. Regarding his attachment to René Faudrin, the commentary agrees with Fischer about Faudrin's integrity but regrets his negligence, which led to the loss of important administrative documents. The commentary concludes by noting that work meetings and debates have been more serene and constructive since Fischer's departure.

Conclusion and SCEAU's Stance

The conclusion states that it is not SCEAU's nature to engage in polemics or fuel controversies, preferring to leave such matters to other UFO research associations. They express bitterness at being attacked and forced to justify themselves. SCEAU finds more joy in signing contracts, cataloging archives, and making them accessible. They promise more positive content in their next issue.

Organizational Chart: Processing Phases of a Ufological Archive Fund

This section includes a detailed flowchart illustrating the organizational structure and phases of processing a ufological archive fund by SCEAU. It outlines steps from initial questionnaires and contracts (deposit or cession) to the handling of documents by independent ufologists, ufological associations, national archives (A.N.), and departmental archives (A.D.). The process includes triaging, detailed inventory, conditioning, and listing for public access or publication.

Inventory of the SCEAU Fund by the Archives de France in Paris

This section presents inventories of funds deposited by SCEAU with the Archives de France since 1991. It notes that the Archives de France's inventory practice is generally less detailed than SCEAU's own annual inventories. The listed deposits include:

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this issue revolve around the internal conflicts and external criticisms faced by the SCEAU association within the French ufology community. There is a strong emphasis on the importance of archiving ufological material and the challenges associated with preserving this heritage. The editorial stance is defensive, as SCEAU responds to accusations of manipulation, debunking, and questionable practices from groups like SOS OVNI, OVNI Futur, and individuals like Guy Tarade and Robert Fischer. Despite the controversies, SCEAU maintains its commitment to its archival mission, contrasting its constructive work with the polemical nature of its critics. The issue also highlights the archival process and the significant holdings managed by SCEAU, as documented by the Archives de France.

This issue of 'HUMOUR' magazine, identified by the page number '21', presents a blend of lighthearted fiction and serious discussion on the preservation of ufological archives. The cover features a humorous cartoon related to the Roswell incident, while the subsequent pages delve into the mission and challenges of the SCEAU (Service de Conservation des Archives Ufologiques) and introduce the CIRU (Club Informatique de Recherche Ufologique).

Fiction: Le Sceau Égaré l'Autopsie de Roswell !

The issue opens with a humorous cartoon on page 1. A woman at a 'SCEAU CONSULTATION' desk is approached by a small alien who politely asks if she has found the results of a 1947 autopsy. The alien's request is a playful nod to the famous Roswell incident, suggesting a fictional scenario where the 'SCEAU' (which is also the name of an archival organization discussed later) might be involved in recovering such historical documents.

Fonds d'Archives Ufologiques Edith Ambroise (Suite)

Pages 2 through 8 detail the extensive archives collected by Edith Ambroise and the broader mission of the SCEAU. The 'Fonds d'Archives Ufologiques Edith Ambroise' section lists various books, magazines, fascicules, and other documents that have been cataloged. These include works on parasciences, spirituality, non-ufological magazines, and diverse ufological materials.

This section lists several books with their authors, titles, editors, and publication dates, covering topics such as Catholicism, Christian biographies, and other spiritual or historical subjects.

B/ Revues

This section is divided into non-ufological and diverse ufological reviews. Notable entries include 'Encyclopédie Je Sais Tout' and 'La Hulotte'.

C/ Fascicules, Plaquetttes, Booklets, &c.

This category includes items related to connected phenomena and parasciences, such as a booklet on 'ATLANTIDE' according to Edgar Cayce.

D/ Publicités

A bibliographic catalog titled 'L'Homme et...les E.T.' is listed.

E/ Documents Photographiques

This section details photographic materials, including UFO sightings in Lecce (Italy) in 1975, photographs of meteorites, UFO observation sites in Valence (1989), unusual animal images, and TV screen captures related to Brocéliande, Druids, and fairies.

F/ Courriers

A list of correspondence is provided, with senders, recipients, and dates, including communications from Marc Thirouin, CIES OURANOS, U.G.E.F., A. Rayjean, Déodat Roché, and CE OURANOS.

G/ Divers Documents Non Ufologiques

This includes a poem, a sponsorship notice, a membership bulletin, and texts related to cats and the Brigitte Bardot Foundation.

La Sauvegarde du Patrimoine Ufologique

Pages 4 through 8 contain a significant article by Gilles Durand titled 'La Sauvegarde du Patrimoine Ufologique ou De la Difficulté de Sensibiliser le Monde Ufologique à la Préservation de sa Mémoire'. This article critically examines the challenges faced by the SCEAU in its mission to preserve ufological archives.

The Marasmus and Revival of Ufology

The article notes a period of decline in ufology, followed by a revival attributed to events like the 'X Files' series and the 50th anniversary of the Kenneth Arnold sighting. However, it highlights that the ufological community remains fragmented, prone to internal disputes, and often engages in public quarrels and defamation.

The SCEAU's Mission and Challenges

The SCEAU aims to be a central repository for ufological archives, working independently of the immediate 'waves' of UFO sightings. It emphasizes the importance of collecting and preserving rare books, original photos, and witness testimonies. The organization faces resistance from various types of individuals within the ufology community:

1. Les attentistes (The Wait-and-See): Those who initially supported the idea but remained on the sidelines.
2. Les irascibles (The Irritable): Individuals who prefer to let the association handle internal conflicts rather than contribute.
3. Les querelleurs (The Quarrelsome): Those who use the SCEAU as a platform to settle their own disputes.
4. Les suspicieux (The Suspicious): Individuals who believe the SCEAU is a front for government agents trying to seize 'explosive' archives.
5. Les atrabilaires (The Melancholic/Bitter): Those who spread negative rumors about the SCEAU's motives, accusing it of appropriation or theft of archives.
6. Les naïfs ou les crédules (The Naive or Gullible): People who entrust their archives to local groups or national associations that may disappear, leading to the loss of valuable material.
7. Les égoïstes (The Selfish): Those who hoard their treasures for potential heirs who may not value them.
8. Les orgueilleux (The Proud): Individuals who see ufology as a superficial pursuit and are not interested in preserving extensive archives.
9. Les inquiets (The Worried): Those who fear that archives might be destroyed or lost, but the SCEAU assures that its contracts prevent this.
10. Les fauchés (The Broke): Individuals who sell their ufological documents at high prices, often due to personal financial needs.
11. Les "rapaces" (The "Vultures"): Mercenary individuals who seek rare documents for commercial gain.
12. Les conservateurs (The Conservatives): Older ufologists who are hesitant to entrust their archives to the SCEAU, viewing its methods as too modern or disrespectful.

The article stresses that the SCEAU's independence is absolute and that its methods, while perhaps different from traditional 'soucoupiste' approaches, are effective and aim to protect the heritage from unscrupulous individuals.

Notes and References

The article includes several footnotes and references, clarifying terms like 'Archives Nationales' (now AN) and detailing the history and formation of the SCEAU, including its origins from earlier projects like ESAU. It also mentions the involvement of various ufological groups and individuals in debates and initiatives related to archive preservation since the late 1970s.

Presentation du CIRU (Club Informatique de Recherche Ufologique)

This section, authored by Gilles Durand in November 1997, details the history of the CIRU. Founded in August 1986 by young students passionate about informatics and ufology, the CIRU aimed to create a telematics network for ufologists and a database for UFO observations. While the ambitious 'INFOVNI' project did not fully succeed, the CIRU participated in ufological events and collaborated with other organizations. Mr. Xavier Burot, the association's head, eventually withdrew from active ufology. The CIRU ceased to exist around 1991, and its archives, after being stored in various locations, were eventually entrusted to the SCEAU in 1995 for preservation and accessibility.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this issue are the humor found in ufological lore (exemplified by the Roswell cartoon) and the critical importance of preserving ufological heritage. The SCEAU's mission is presented as a vital but challenging endeavor, highlighting the internal divisions and varied attitudes within the ufology community that hinder collective efforts. The magazine's stance, as conveyed through the articles, is one of advocacy for systematic archival preservation, emphasizing the need for a structured approach to safeguard the history of ufology for future generations. The editorial tone is serious and concerned regarding the potential loss of valuable historical material, while also acknowledging the humorous and sometimes absurd aspects of the field.

This document is an archival inventory of ufology publications, primarily French, associated with CIRU and Xavier Burot, who was president of CIRU from 1986 to 1991. It lists various ufology magazines and bulletins, their editors, and publication dates, spanning from the 1970s to the 1990s. The document also includes photographs related to the archiving and transport of CIRU's fonds, featuring Xavier Burot and others involved in the process.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this compilation are the extensive documentation and cataloging of UFO phenomena, historical cases, witness testimonies, and the activities of ufological organizations. The editorial stance appears to be one of thorough archival and research, presenting a wide array of information without explicit judgment, aiming to provide a comprehensive resource for those interested in ufology. The focus is on collecting and organizing data from various sources, including press articles, personal accounts, and organizational records.

This document is not a typical magazine issue but rather a detailed listing and description of services and archives related to ufology, primarily from the perspective of the SCEAU organization. The main focus is on 'LE TROC', a book exchange service, and the extensive archives managed by CNEGU/CVLDLN.

LE TROC: Service d'échange de livres à l'amiable

This section details the 'LE TROC' service, which facilitates the exchange of ufological books among enthusiasts. The primary goals are to enrich ufological collections, prevent surplus books from becoming immobilized, and introduce ufologists to the SCEAU organization and its services.

Modalities of Exchange

Individuals wishing to exchange books should send their proposals to Mr. Thierry PINVIDIC, President of SCEAU and head of TROC. SCEAU will evaluate the proposal and, if the book is suitable, will offer a list of available books in return. The TROC list is updated annually and published in the SCEAU bulletin. It is available to non-members upon request with a stamped envelope, and to members upon simple request.

Priority in exchanges is given to members of SCEAU or to requests with the earliest postmark in case of simultaneous requests for the same book.

Exchanges can be conducted via mail, requiring the signing of a 'Echange de documents à l'amiable' form and registered mail with postage paid by both parties. Alternatively, exchanges can be done in person, with a signature on the TROC register or the TROC form.

Contact information for the TROC service is provided: Mr. Thierry PINVIDIC, 80 ave de Clichy, 75017 PARIS.

List of Books Proposed within the 'TROC' Framework

  • A table lists several books available for exchange, including:
  • 'LA SCIENCE FACE AUX EXTRA-TERRESTRES' by J.C. BOURRET (1978)

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring theme throughout this document is the cataloging of ufology-related publications. The editorial stance appears to be that of an archivist or bibliographer, aiming to provide a comprehensive listing of available resources in the field of ufology from various European countries. The document does not express opinions or engage in analysis of the UFO phenomenon itself, but rather focuses on the dissemination of information through these periodicals.

This issue of "Paléontologie Future" appears to be a compilation of UFO-related publications, archives, and research materials, with a focus on a project by an organization called SCEAU for self-managed UFO libraries. The publication spans a range of dates, with content primarily from the 1980s and early 1990s, but also referencing older materials from the 1950s. The primary language is French.

SCEAU Project: Self-Managed UFO Library

The core of this issue details a project initiated by SCEAU, aimed at creating a method for individuals to manage their personal UFO libraries. The project, developed by Gilles Munsch, is based on an extensive list of approximately 420 UFO-related works. Users can obtain this list either on a computer diskette (requiring ACCESS software) or as a paper listing. The goal is for users to adapt this list to their own collections by deleting entries they don't own and adding those they do, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive database. The project aims to involve a maximum number of members and external ufologists in managing their archives, facilitating future inventory processes, and encouraging the rediscovery of overlooked documentation. The method has been tested successfully by SCEAU members, with Raoul Robé cataloging 131 titles in two hours using the computer format and Thierry Rocher using the manual format. The method is suggested to be extendable to other types of documents, such as commercial magazines.

It also lists a wide array of ufological associations and scientific organizations, both French and international.

Themes and Editorial Stance

The overarching theme is the organization and management of UFO research materials, emphasizing the importance of archives and bibliographies. The editorial stance appears to be one of promoting systematic research, documentation, and the sharing of information within the ufological community. The cover illustration and the "Paléontologie Future" title suggest a forward-looking perspective on understanding UFO phenomena, potentially through historical and archival analysis.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this issue revolve around the meticulous cataloging and preservation of UFO-related information. The SCEAU project highlights the importance of structured archives and bibliographies for serious research. The publication advocates for a systematic approach to collecting, organizing, and sharing UFO documentation. The editorial stance is one of promoting ufology as a field of study that requires rigorous methodology and accessible resources, encouraging individuals to contribute to a collective knowledge base. The "Paléontologie Future" title and the cover artwork suggest an interest in understanding the historical context and evolution of UFO phenomena, possibly with a view towards future scientific or historical analysis.

This issue of "Lumières dans la Nuit" (Lights in the Night), number 160, dated December 1976, focuses on the methodology of researching UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) phenomena through press archives. The main article, "A PROPOS DE RECHERCHES D'ARCHIVES" (About Archive Research), serves as a guide for researchers, particularly younger ones, on how to effectively utilize newspaper archives.

Where and How to Search?

The article emphasizes that while the task might seem tedious, it is a passionate activity. It advises researchers to contact the Departmental Archives of their respective departments to consult regional newspapers. The process involves meticulously noting down the exact date and the journal number for each piece of information.

Choosing the Right Years

While 1954 is highlighted as a pivotal year due to a significant wave of UFO observations and the general public's reaction (described as a 'general psychosis'), the article suggests that interesting facts might also be found outside of major waves. The period from 1945 to 1960 is recommended for its potential, with specific years like 1942, 1944, 1947, 1950, 1954, 1957, 1959, 1964, and 1967 being cited by Claude POHER as particularly remarkable.

What to Find?

Beyond major French UFO waves, information is often not explicitly about 'flying saucers' or 'OVNI.' Instead, descriptions frequently refer to 'luminous spheres,' 'strange celestial phenomena,' or 'unknown objects.' The article notes that the term 'OVNI' only appeared in the press around 1960-1965. It encourages researchers to also look for articles on meteors, the unusual, and strange occurrences, providing examples like "an odor of sulfur spreads in a farmhouse and the goldfish dies in its aquarium" or "a mysterious flash paints a white trawler pink."

Furthermore, the article points to articles concerning the construction of 'flying saucers' intended to revolutionize astronautics, such as "In three months, he will leave for the moon in a flying saucer" or "The amphibian SV, means of transport of the future."

Which Newspapers to Consult?

Regional newspapers are considered the most valuable, as each region and department has its own specific edition. These often contain lesser-known information not picked up by national or Parisian press. Examples include "La Nouvelle République du Centre Ouest" and "Ouest France." The article also mentions that some Municipal Libraries may possess relevant newspaper collections.

The article concludes with an appeal for help, stating that many newspapers have yet to be thoroughly searched and that numerous unknown cases could be added to the national file maintained by Mme Gueudelot. It calls for more 'arms, eyes, and courage' to continue this work.

Fonds d'Archives Ufologiques AIHPI/SPEPSE

Page 2 details the "Fonds d'Archives Ufologiques AIHPI/SPEPSE." This collection primarily consists of journals donated by Gilles DURAND, which were part of a larger donation from a former member of the defunct SPEPSE (Ste Parisienne d'Etude des Phénomènes Spatioux et Etranges). The collection also includes an incomplete set of the journal "Nostra." These documents are deposited in Paris and will help fill gaps in existing collections at the AD (Archives Départementales).

It also lists French ufological journals and their editors:

  • UFOLOGIE CONTACT: Edited by SPEPSE, Paris (75).
  • LUMIÈRES DANS LA NUIT: Edited by Raymond Veillith, Le Chambon sur Lignon.
  • LES EXTRA TERRESTRES: Edited by GEOS France, St Denis les Rebais (77).
  • UFO INFORMATIONS: Edited by AAMT, Valence (26).

Previsions d'Activites 1997

Page 3 outlines the planned activities for 1997, focusing on depositing archives with the AD of Moselle. The "SCEAU/CNEGU" fund, composed of contributions from Claude FLEURANCE, GPUN, and CVLDLN, is expected to be substantial. Plans also include the creation of a thematic library at the Pontiffroy Mediatheque with 400 titles, the constitution of further library collections, and the development of a "Troc" (exchange) project. The year 1997 is also earmarked for sending out questionnaires to ufologists and those who have been rediscovered through the "Avis de recherche" (Notice of Search) initiative. A project to compile press clippings from the Nord-Est region, estimated at 1500-2000 items, is also underway, potentially leading to a published database.

Avis de Recherche 1996: "UFOLOGUES PERDUS DE VUE"

This section, spanning pages 3 to 10, presents a detailed database of "Ufologues Perdus de Vue" (Ufologists Lost from View). It is presented as a data bank for easy management. The previous version was purged based on information from members like Michel Monnerie and Serge Carlier, and Minitel research. The article acknowledges that some individuals have criticized the "unveiling" of names, particularly those of deceased persons, but states that the issue remains unresolved. Readers are encouraged to study the 641 listed entries to provide necessary information for updating the directory and facilitating contact with individuals.

The subsequent pages (4-10) list hundreds of individuals involved in ufology, providing their names, associations, useful information, geographical sectors, departments, dates of activity, and specific roles or activities within the ufological community. This extensive list serves as a directory for researchers seeking to connect with or find information about individuals in the field.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this issue revolve around the practical aspects of UFO research, emphasizing the importance of archival work, particularly with regional press. The editorial stance is one of encouragement for active participation in research, highlighting the value of historical data and the need for collective effort. There's a clear call to action for researchers to contribute to the growing body of UFO knowledge by meticulously documenting and sharing information. The publication also acts as a hub for the ufological community, facilitating connections and information exchange through initiatives like the "Avis de Recherche."

This document is a specialized publication titled "AVIS DE RECHERCHE/UFOLOGUES PERDUS DE VUE" (Search Notice/Ufologists Lost from View), issue number 4, published in the 4th trimester of 2006 by "SCEAU". It is presented as the 2nd Edition of the "BULLETIN DU SCEAU N° 4". The content primarily consists of extensive lists of individuals involved in ufology in France, detailing their names, affiliations with various UFO research groups, geographical locations of their activities, and their specific roles or contributions. The publication appears to be a directory or a database of contacts within the French ufological community.

Other Content

The issue also includes a small cartoonish illustration with text related to "SCEAU" and its archives, along with a note about the "BULLETIN DU SCEAU N° 4", 4th Edition, 3rd trimester 2006, and a mention of 50 copies being saved for the "fonds du SCEAU". The illustration depicts a desk with papers, a file labeled "SCEAU", and a thought bubble with a casserole and soup, humorously suggesting that even with old archives, one can "catch heat".

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The primary theme is the documentation and cataloging of individuals involved in ufological research in France. The publication acts as a historical record and a directory, aiming to preserve the memory and contact information of these researchers, many of whom might be considered "lost from view" over time. The editorial stance appears to be one of archival and preservation, focusing on the collective effort within the ufological community. The use of detailed lists and geographical data suggests a systematic approach to documenting the field.
