Title: PEGASUS
Issue: November-December 1981
Publisher: Surrey Investigation Group on Aerial Phenomena (SIGAP)
Type: Journal

This issue of PEGASUS, the journal of the Surrey Investigation Group on Aerial Phenomena (SIGAP), presents a collection of articles and reports related to UFO sightings and investigations. The cover features a stylized drawing of a UFO over a landscape and the magazine's title and publication details.

Contents This Month

The issue begins with an editorial note on the prevailing bad weather and its potential impact on reported UFO events, while also highlighting the receipt of numerous magazines from abroad and within the UK, available to members. The table of contents lists several articles:

  • Page 2: A "Bobbing Ball" At Thornton Heath.
  • Page 3: An Interesting Case From Guernsey.
  • Page 4/5: World Powers Are On The UFO Trail.
  • Page 6: "Tale Enders" (Correspondence etc.).
  • Page 7: "News Snippets" & Jean Bastide's Cartoon Time.
  • Page 8/9: "Extra-Terrestrial Interference In Fatima" (Part 2).
  • Page 10: UFO Literature For Sale (Advertisement).

An extract from "Northern UFO News" titled "UFO's & THE NEW TOY" discusses the importance of identified flying objects (IFOs) and mentions a case study of a UFO at Warminster, which was reconstructed as a new type of toy balloon. SIGAP assisted in this investigation, and an article by Richard Colborne had previously drawn attention to metallic toy balloons.

Article Summaries

A "Bobbing Ball" At Thornton Heath (Page 2-3)

This article details a sighting by Mr and Mrs Bateman on November 13, 1981, in Thornton Heath, South London. At approximately 2300 hours, Mrs Bateman observed a bright light falling rapidly from the sky, described as a "falling rocket." The light then hovered, darted back and forth, and changed colors from red to white. After moving away towards Norbury, it returned and hovered again, emitting a "big beam of light" underneath before shooting straight up into the sky and disappearing. The witnesses, familiar with aircraft, were certain it was not normal aviation activity and were alarmed by the incident. The report notes that the sideways "rocking" motion and changing light pattern have been reported in other UFO cases.

An Interesting Case From Guernsey (Page 4)

This report, from the Guernsey UFO Research Group (GUFORG), details a sighting on September 20, 1981, at Clairval Estate, St Peter Port. A family observed an intense yellowish-white object with three lights on top. The object was described as oblong with flat sides and a "radius bottom." It remained stationary before moving silently southwards and disappearing. Mr Geoff Falla of GUFORG searched for similar reports but found none. However, he discovered a 1970 Guernsey report about a giant "flying mirror" object seen over Guernsey by Mrs Sybil Gavey, who described it as oblong, beautiful, floating, and then vanishing into a small ball, leaving the sky pink.

World Powers Are On The UFO Trail (Page 5-6)

This article speculates on the reasons behind government interest in UFO phenomena, suggesting it might be to prevent rival powers from gaining information rather than hiding facts from the public. It recounts an incident from the early sixties during the Gemini space flights where a UFO reportedly parked over Adelaide, Australia, causing radio interference between the Gemini craft and the communications centre. The report was broadcast on BBC radio but later seemed to be suppressed. Another incident from the 1979 "flap" in the Ash-Farnborough area involved a multi-coloured object seen by a school caretaker. This witness was later visited by individuals identifying as a high-ranking American Air Force officer and a Ministry of Defence investigator, who questioned him about the sighting. The article also mentions a crashed UFO in the "Ozark Mountains" in the USA, investigated by the USAF. Finally, it touches upon an enquiry postcard received from the USSR concerning SIGAP's activities, noting the sender's address was from the "Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR" in Novosibirsk. The article links this to a BBC "Horizon" program on beam and laser weapons, suggesting that if the Russians are investigating UFOs, it might be at Novosibirsk.

"Tale Enders" (Page 7)

This section includes correspondence and comments. Terry Clark from RAE ATC Farnborough comments on Case S971 (previously reported in Pegasus), suggesting that Mr Idler's description of an incident at Oxshott might tally with the Heathrow-Gatwick Link helicopter service, noting the route, height, and colors. He expresses curiosity as to why Mr Idler reported it if he was familiar with the aircraft. Another extract is from a letter by Mr B. Taylor, a BUFORA member, who prefers Pegasus to the "BUFORA BULLETIN." The section also reports on a Public Meeting held by the Surrey Radio Station in Guildford on November 30, 1981, where the public aired their views. Jean Bastide has provided a copy of his book "La Memoire Des OVNI" for members.

"News Snippets" & Jean Bastide's Cartoon Time (Page 8)

This section discusses puzzling full-page advertisements that appeared in national newspapers in December, referring to a mysterious "globe" in the Midlands. These were revealed to be a spoof by Central T.V. to promote their logo, which upset a real Mrs Betty Davis, a Nottingham Magistrate, who was bombarded with calls about her sighting. The section also includes a cartoon by Jean Bastide, humorously depicting a UFO with the caption "It must be a Xmas special."

"Extra-Terrestrial Interference In Fatima" (Part 2) (Page 9)

This article continues the discussion on the Fatima apparitions, comparing the phenomena to modern UFO encounters. It lists similarities such as lightnings, thunders, hummings, bizarre clouds, luminous objects, and mechanical malfunctions. The article focuses on the testimony of a "fourth witness," Carolina Carreira, from 1923. She reported seeing a beautiful, small "angel" and hearing a telepathic voice urging her to pray, followed by the appearance of a "Lady of the celestial hierarchy." The authors suggest a parallel between this telepathic being and modern humanoid typologies, noting that mental manipulation is a modern concept. The article is based on a paper presented at the Second London International UFO Congress in May 1981.

UFO Literature For Sale (Page 10)

This page features advertisements for Portuguese publications, including "ILUSTRAÇÃO PORTUGUESA" and "COISAS ESPANTOSAS!" which contains an article titled "COMO O SOL BAILOU AO MEIO DIA EM FÁTIMA" (How the Sun Danced at Midday in Fatima), referencing a newspaper report from October 15, 1917. There are also illustrations related to the Fatima events and UFOs.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this issue include the detailed investigation of specific UFO sightings, the exploration of potential government involvement and secrecy surrounding UFO phenomena, and the examination of historical cases and their potential links to modern UFO reports. The editorial stance appears to be one of open inquiry, presenting witness testimonies and analytical perspectives, while also acknowledging the importance of identified cases and the need for simple detective work in pursuing UFO events. The magazine aims to inform its members and the public about ongoing research and significant historical incidents in the field of aerial phenomena.

Surrey Investigation Group on Aerial Phenomena (SIGAP)

The second page provides information about the Surrey Investigation Group on Aerial Phenomena (SIGAP). It is described as a non-profit-making voluntary organisation founded in 1967 to investigate UFO phenomena locally in Surrey and surrounding counties, and has contributed to studies in many parts of Southern England.

SIGAP's Operations:

SIGAP receives news of sightings through its 'Hot-line' (Farnborough 41012), triggering a preliminary enquiry procedure to eliminate obvious explanations. It is noted that over 80 percent of reports can be explained in terms of natural and man-made phenomena. If no immediate explanation is found, SIGAP investigators interview witnesses and may visit the site of the observation. The group then consults its own experts and liaises with similar organisations throughout the country to find patterns of activity.

International Cooperation:

SIGAP's most significant reports are sent to the Center for UFO Studies in Evanston, Illinois, USA, which is run by Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a former consultant to the US Air Force on UFOs. SIGAP also exchanges magazines with a wide range of international UFO organisations, including Northern UFOLOGY, BUFORA Journal, FSR, S.T.V Quest, UFO Insight, SAPRT, Radio 210, CEFAI (Portugal), MAPIT, UFO Network, GEP (Germany), UFO News Bulletin, Guernsey UFO Research Gp, Odyssey (Yugoslavia), Archives For UFO Research (Sweden), and CUN (Italy).

SIGAP Publication:

The SIGAP magazine is published bi-monthly and is intended for SIGAP members only. Copies may be purchased by non-members at a cost of 50 pence per copy.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

This issue primarily functions as a sales catalog for UFO literature, reflecting a strong interest in the dissemination and availability of information on the subject. The inclusion of SIGAP's profile highlights an editorial stance that supports and promotes UFO research and investigation, emphasizing a methodical approach to analyzing sightings and collaborating with other organizations. The emphasis on 'used' literature suggests a focus on historical and perhaps out-of-print materials, catering to collectors and researchers interested in the foundational works of ufology.
