Its disappearance coincided with efforts to pick up Mariner signals, and the Goldstone Tracking Station received message irregularities.

Portugal: On a Sunday in July, strange objects moving through space were reported in two separate areas. The Azors Weather Bureau claimed interference from one object stopped its electromagnetic clocks. In Motosinhos, a couple described a luminous, flattened balloon with orange and green coloring, which later appeared like a plate turned over and moved at incredible velocity. Similar interference was reported at the Villa do Porto Weather Bureau.

France: On July 3rd, gendarmes in Valensole were investigating a report by a farmer who saw a mysterious aircraft take off from his field. Tracks were found, and the farmer described the craft as a large rugby ball with four metal legs. A small human form, about the size of an 8-year-old child, emerged from the craft, dressed in a spacesuit.

Peru: Reports from July 24th indicate Peruvians are seeing flying objects. One scientist asserted they were piloted by beings 3-1/2 feet tall. A chemist and his wife reported a bright flashing object landing on a hill near their ranch for 45 minutes, leaving singed plants and overturned rocks. Peruvian scientists issued a statement confirming the existence of flying objects and placed observatories on a 24-hour alert.

Southern England: Strange objects, described as "fiery" and glowing, were reported after a heavy rain. Harold Horlock and his wife spotted such a thing, which "sharpened into focus high up and looked just like two red hot pokers." Others reported hearing loud, high-pitched noises.

United States Sightings

Washington: On Friday night, July 16th, a couple in East Wenatchee sighted swiftly moving, strange glowing objects described as a "real beautiful purplish red glow." They moved quickly and were visible for only about five seconds at an estimated altitude of 8,000 to 10,000 feet.

Virginia: An "unidentified" label was placed by the Air Force on a reported cone-shaped flying object that landed near Toano on January 22nd. Witnesses reported their car engines stalled as the object passed overhead. It was described as large, with blue, yellow, and white lights, hovering for about half a minute before zooming upward.

Idaho: Three Lewiston residents reported seeing a brilliant flashing light crossing the horizon from west to east at 9:45 p.m. It was described as much brighter than an airplane light and much higher than the clouds.

Oregon: Three persons in the Fossil area reported seeing three unidentified, cigar-shaped objects about 60 miles south of highway 30. They were estimated to be about 3,500 feet high and remained stationary for about two minutes before disappearing towards John Day. No noise or movement was observed.

Florida: A marine scientist planning to explore the Gulf Stream's depths detected and possibly photographed a fast-moving, unidentified, pear-shaped object on the bottom of the warm-water stream. The object moved at a constant speed and direction, possibly on a robot pilot.

Washington: Two boys in Shelton reported seeing a large, round, silvery ball, described as "about the size of the moon when viewed at night time," which shot straight up in the sky.

Massachusetts: A report from the Eltanin ship, operated for the U.S. National Science Foundation, showed photographs of what looked like a complex radio antennae jutting from the ocean floor at a depth of 2250 fathoms. This lends credence to reports of undersea activity by unidentified flying objects.

Scientific and Expert Commentary

Jacques Vallee's "Anatomy of a Phenomenon": The book is highlighted as the first scientific appraisal of flying objects from outer space. Vallee, an astronomer and data analyst, draws on U.S. Air Force files and notes that sightings from around the world share common descriptions and universal behavior, suggesting UFOs may indeed exist. U.S. Air Force Center in Dayton, Ohio: It is revealed that the Air Force has a center dedicated to recording and ascertaining the validity of UFO sightings.

Dr. Zdenek Kopal: A consultant to NASA, predicts a 50 percent chance of seeing other stars' planets from an orbital laboratory.

Leonard H. Marks: Lady Bird Johnson's attorney, believes that when spacemen land on Mars, they will find life there. He considers flying objects and the probability of intelligent extraterrestrial life a "subject for intelligent discussion."

National Radio Astronomy Observatory: In November 1961, astronomers gathered to swap ideas on "intelligent extra-terrestrial life," indicating a growing scientific interest in the subject.

Radio Signals and Mysterious Objects: Some of Marks' astronomer-clients have encountered mysterious objects while bouncing radio signals off solar bodies and probing the outer atmosphere.
