This issue of the Missouri MUFON Newsletter covers a significant surge in UFO sightings in the Kansas City area during early October 2011, alongside an announcement for a special meeting featuring UFO researcher Ted Phillips. October UFOs in Missouri/Ted Phillips to Speak in St. Louis

By Debbie Ziegelmeyer, Missouri MUFON State Director

October 2011 was a busy month for Missouri MUFON, with 56 reports logged. The majority of sightings occurred between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm on October 4th in the Kansas City area. While some reports were identified as the EAA Stunt Flying Team from Lee's Summit Municipal Airport, many others described large, triangle-shaped craft with yellow lights hovering over highways 435 and Hwy 70. The presence of small drones from WAFB in the area also requires investigation.

The St. Louis area MUFON meeting in October featured guest speaker Ted Phillips, a UFO researcher who has investigated over 800 UFO reports and compiled extensive research on physical trace landing cases. Dr. J. Allen Hynek described Phillips as 'the world expert in physical traces found at alleged UFO landing sites.' Ziegelmeyer also presented Phillips with the MUFON Ufologist of the Year award. The meeting was scheduled for an earlier start time of 6:00 pm to accommodate Cardinal fans and allow Phillips to travel. A $5.00 donation per person was requested to help cover Phillips' expenses. The meeting was held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, October 19th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Culpepper's Restaurant in Creve Coeur, Missouri.

Kansas City Area UFO Surge Oct 3-5 a Puzzle

By Margie Kay, Assistant State Director, Missouri MUFON

This article details a UFO flap in East Kansas City, Missouri, and surrounding areas that occurred between Monday, October 3rd, and Wednesday, October 5th, 2011. A total of 56 reports were received, with most occurring on October 4th. Margie Kay led the investigation, assisted by Debbie Ziegelmeyer and Stan Seba. The national MUFON website was inundated with reports, and additional reports came through Kay's office, local police, airports, and the Sheriff's office.

What made this event unusual was the number of witnesses who captured photos and video, and the variety of descriptions for the objects. Craft were described as triangular, round, disc-shaped, morphing, and orange fireballs. Some moved slowly, while others moved at 'light speed.' Some hovered over vehicles and buildings at an estimated 60 feet above witnesses.

While some sightings were attributed to the EAA Flying Team and potential sightings of B-2 Stealth Bombers, many could not be explained as conventional aircraft. Stan Seba contacted Whiteman AFB and confirmed that B-2 bombers from the 509th bomb squadron were training in the area, flying low over populated areas with their navigational lights on. Some witness photos matched B-2 aircraft, and the bombers reported their positions over KCMO. However, many other reports remained unexplained.

After the Spike—Missouri UFO Traffic Slowing Down

By Roger Marsh, UFO Examiner for www.examiner.com

This section reports on the decrease in UFO sightings over the Kansas City, MO, area following a spike on October 3-4, 2011. Reports logged through MUFON up to October 13, 2011, indicate a return to more average sighting numbers. Missouri MUFON and the MUFON STAR Team are investigating reports not associated with the EAA Flying Team's night formation flying on October 4th.

**Summary of Cases (October 3-13, 2011):

  • October 3, 2011: 8 reports logged.
  • October 4, 2011: 27 reports logged, with many identified.
  • October 5, 2011: A witness driving home along I-35 noticed a hovering object near Liberty, described as larger than a helicopter with white, bright beams of light, and a red blinking light. Initially thought to be a UFO, it was later considered a helicopter.
  • October 4, 2011 (Company Van near Royals Stadium): Eight employees observed lights hovering above highway I-70. The object was initially circular, then appeared triangular, with blue and white flashing lights, estimated to be about 500 feet from the ground.
  • October 4, 2011 (Lee's Summit): A witness driving south on Douglass saw a bright orange/red fireball move over their car and hover for 10 minutes before moving east quickly.
  • October 6, 2011: A witness near Prairie View Grade School noticed a patch of sky with no stars, which was a flat, black triangle.
  • October 7, 2011: A witness observed a very bright light in the eastern sky, east of their home, seeming to be over Odessa.
  • October 8, 2011: A couple driving toward St. Louis noticed 'strange lights' moving over trees, initially in a triangle formation, then changing orientation. Three lights were in front, with another merging with the formation.
  • October 9, 2011: A witness saw a shining light moving at incredible speed, which then slowed to a hover, glowed brightly, and returned to an oval shape.
  • October 11, 2011: A witness saw a 'blue and red object' emerge quickly from behind trees, hover briefly, and then leave the area.
  • October 11, 2011 (Raytown): A witness saw an object hovering in the sky at a stoplight.
  • Downtown Kansas City (5:47 a.m.): A witness took a picture to prove an 'ongoing incursion or deluge of these things.'

Roger Marsh notes that the skies over Kansas City seemed to have returned to more average UFO sightings after this spike. The article also mentions that the EAA Flying Team flew in formation over Lee's Summit and the Chief's Stadium on October 4th between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm as a demonstration for the Chiefs' night game on October 31st. The Lee's Summit Airport had received several odd reports of UFOs in the preceding weeks, including a low-flying helicopter at 1:30 a.m. and low-flying balls of light, and will now send unexplained reports to Missouri MUFON.

Missouri has seen a larger than normal increase in sightings since May 2011, with only 7-10 reports per month prior to that. Missouri MUFON received 117 reports since July 15, with 66 in the greater KC area. Investigations are ongoing, and MUFON is seeking more witnesses with video or still photos.

Letter to the Editor

Date: October 17, 2011

The author recounts a childhood experience from the mid-1950s in southwest Missouri where, while using a magnifying glass to burn ants, they and a neighbor boy saw an orb-like object described as an oblong shape made of flames, held together by an invisible wire. The object emitted a voice-like thought telling the author it was wrong to kill and torture helpless things. This experience terrified both children.

The author also inquires about the family who lived next door during that time, noting that while they were close neighbors, no one could recall any details about them except that they lived next door. The author's memory of the orb sighting is the most vivid, and they reflect on the fear of ridicule associated with sharing such experiences, attributing it to a manifestation of fear and denial.
