Magazine Overview

This issue of the MUFON Arizona Newsletter, Volume 8, Issue 7, dated July 28, 1999, focuses on UFO phenomena with a variety of articles, reports, and announcements.

Directors Message

Alan Morey, State Director, reports on a quiet period followed by a major sighting on the night of July 4th in Scottsdale, Arizona. A witness observed an array of lights in a triangular formation and captured approximately 3 1/2 minutes of video. The event was discussed on KTAR radio and reported by Channel 12. The video will be shown uncut at the upcoming meeting, with an updated report on findings. The case is currently classified as a UFO until proven otherwise.

July Book Sale and Raffle

The July raffle features the movie "Deep Impact" and the book "Sightings" by Susan Michaels. Both items will be auctioned off together for $1.00 per ticket.

Media Watch

This section provides a list of recent and upcoming UFO-related television and radio programs. Members are encouraged to share information about programs they find. Bufo Calvin compiles TV programs and can be contacted via email. Weekly radio programs listed include "Dreamland" with Art Bell on KFYI Radio, "Spacecraft News" with Franklin Carter on KFNX, "UFO Live" with Dr. Duncan Bowen on KFNX, "Fractal Dimensions" with Dr. Simeon Hein on KFNX, and "Mysteries Around Us" hosted by Frank Baranowski on KTAR Radio. Weekly TV programs include "X-Files" and "Sightings" on the SciFi Channel.

Calendar

Announcements for upcoming chapter meetings are provided for Pima County (Wilmot Library), Pinal County (Meghans Restaurant), and Yuma County. The Maricopa County Chapter meeting is scheduled for July 28, 1999, with admission fees of $3.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members. The Experiencer's Meeting is on hiatus until September 20, 1999.

A Personal Message from Dr. Roger Leir

Dr. Roger Leir, Section Director for Ventura-Santa Barbara MUFON, shares an update on his health following a heart attack. He expresses gratitude for the support received and discusses his ongoing research into the abduction phenomenon. He is seeking support for his research proposal from Joe Firmage and encourages members to write to him.

Kevin Randle Booked for October Meeting!

MUFON AZ announces that author Kevin Randle will be lecturing at the October meeting. The organization's financial stability, bolstered by bookstore sales, has enabled them to secure such guests. Members are urged to attend meetings and support the organization financially, as monthly expenses exceed $200.00. Donations can be sent to Tom Taylor, MUFON treasurer.

Current UFO Cases and Sightings: Local and Worldwide

UFO'S in the North Bordering on the Horrific: Reports from south Armagh, UK, indicate a spate of UFO sightings that residents believe are different from military activity. Andrew Allen of the British UFO Research Association notes numerous reports and mentions a serious incident involving a mutilated cow. He urges witnesses to come forward.

Satellite Likely Cause of UFO Sighting: Police in Australia believe a satellite re-entry caused reports of a flaming object in the sky on April 27, 1999. Several reports were received along the east coast, with one object crashing into bushland near Mittagong.

Search Fails to Find Clues to UFO: A police search near Calliope, Australia, failed to find any trace of an object seen falling from the sky. Reports included a truck driver seeing a flaming object and a resident describing a brilliant green object that lit up the sky.

STRANGE UFO CAPTURED ON RADAR NORTH OF SCOTLAND: This article details an incident from the winter of 1964-1965 at RAF Saxa Vord, Shetland Isles. Radar operators observed a stationary object at approximately 20,000 feet that then ascended vertically at high speed, reaching an altitude of about 100,000 feet, beyond the capabilities of known aircraft. The incident was documented by the Royal Air Force.

DA Investigating Recent Cow Deaths

Brendan Smith reports from the Albuquerque Journal on unusual cattle deaths on the Tres Ritos Ranch near Questa, New Mexico. A calf and two cows were found dead with missing body parts and unexplained wounds. The 8th Judicial District Attorney's Office is investigating, and theories range from aliens to secret government projects. Gabe Valdez, a retired State Police officer, is assisting the investigation, which is also being supported by the National Institute for Discovery Science.

SWISS AIR Reports UFO

On August 9, 1997, the flight crew of a Swissair Boeing 747-300 reported an unusual sighting over New York. The object, described as white and fast-moving, flew directly overhead at a low altitude. Interviews with the captain and first officer revealed they saw a white, round object that passed overhead very quickly, with no noise or wake turbulence. The object appeared to be flying exactly opposite of the aircraft.

A Star...or a UFO?

I. K. Alcott shares a personal experience from June 1991 in Phoenix, Arizona. While driving, he observed a stationary star-like object near the moon and Venus. The object then flashed into a cruciform shape before darting away and exhibiting unusual behavior, including moving in and out of a cloudbank. Alcott reflects on the coincidences, the "why me" aspect, the object's behavior, and the cloud formation, concluding that the experience has given him "KNOWING" rather than belief.

Return to Tunguska

This article by David Whitehouse of BBC News Online discusses the Tunguska event of June 30, 1908, in Siberia. Scientists are undertaking an expedition to solve the mystery of the cosmic impact, which had the force of 20 million tons of TNT and flattened millions of trees without leaving a crater. A University of Bologna expedition is using advanced equipment to study sediments in Lake Ceko and conduct aerial surveys.

Classic UFO Cases

Highly Maneuverable Ellipse w/ Red Light Beam: On August 13, 1960, officers Charles A. Carson and Stanley of the California Highway Patrol observed a large illuminated object near Red Bluff, California. The object performed aerial feats, including reversing direction and emitting a red beam, and caused radio interference.
