Magazine Overview

From the Director's Desk

Roswell Declaration

Buffalos made 'UFO circles,' rancher says

This article from the Sidney Herald-Leader (September 29, 1993) reports on mysterious circles found in Sidney, Montana. Eighty-year-old Waldemar Sorensen claims these are "buffalo circles," formed by bulls walking in circles to guard cows and calves from wolves. He found a passage in a 1938 book by Martin S. Garretson supporting this explanation. Dr. Laszlo Steiner, a California UFO researcher, had previously suggested they were UFO circles, while Richland County Extension Agent Red Lovec considered them fairy rings (caused by fungus) or possibly UFO or buffalo circles. Lovec expresses doubt that buffalo dung from 80 years ago would still be potent enough to create visible effects today, but acknowledges that fairy rings are associated with nutrient-rich soil, potentially from old buffalo dung, and can be identified by their outward growth.
