Upcoming Events

Meeting in Prague The bulletin announces a meeting scheduled for Saturday, November 14, 2015, at the restaurant U Vodárny in Prague. The program, running from 10:00 to 16:00, includes a series of lectures by various speakers:

Attendance is open to non-members, and guests are welcome. To participate, attendees must confirm their attendance via email to [email protected] by October 31, 2015.

Art Exhibition A sales exhibition titled 'HARMONIE UMĚLECKÉHO DÍLA A SÍLA V NÁS' (Harmony of Artistic Work and Strength Within Us) is being held. This exhibition showcases the artistic and research activities of academic painter Jiřina Průchová from 1988 to 2015. The vernissage (opening reception) is on October 15, 2015, at 18:00. Please confirm attendance by email. The exhibition will run daily from October 16 to November 8, 2015, from 11:00 to 20:00 at OC Park Hostivař, 1st floor, Švehlova 1391/32, Prague 10.

Financial Contributions Contributions to support the organizations' activities are voluntary. A minimum of 120 CZK grants access to certain benefits, including website access. The bulletin also details membership fees for 2015:

• Correspondence and FB members: Voluntary contribution (120-999 CZK).
• Full members: Minimum 1000 CZK per year.

Services for members include access to information banks, archives, priority purchase of publications, and participation in events.

Ancient Greek Vase and Giraffe Head A Greek vase in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, dated to approximately 500 BC, depicts a scene from the Trojan War where Heracles rescues Hesione from a sea monster. The monster's head, previously thought to be a product of artistic imagination, has recently been identified by Adrian Maior of Princeton as closely resembling a giraffe's head. This raises questions about whether a prehistoric giraffe skull or even a live animal inspired the ancient poet.

Unusual Hailstorm at Malá Skála In July 1940, Czech docent Dr. Jan Obenberger described an unusual hailstorm near Malá Skála u Turnova. The hailstones ranged from 30 to 270 grams, with a round or cylindrical shape. Their internal structure was predominantly radial with a glassy, transparent core. Some hailstones appeared like 'baked' lumps of ice and were difficult to break, taking hours to melt.
