Main Activities and Events

"Crash II" Conference

The primary activity of the quarter was "Crash II," a conference organized by the Fund for UFO Research. This conference brought together investigators and witnesses of the reported crash and recovery of Unidentified Flying Objects. Notably, ten witnesses with information about the 1947 Roswell, New Mexico incident were present. The conference was made possible by a special contribution.

All witnesses, with one exception, agreed to be identified and have their statements recorded on videotape for archival purposes. Following the conference, the Fund's Executive Committee sought proposals from investigators, including Stanton T. Friedman, Donald R. Schmitt, and Kevin Randle, to conduct further interviews and videotape additional witnesses in the Roswell case.

Fundraising Campaign

Schmitt and Randle requested $6,600 to interview 24 additional witnesses. Leonard H. Stringfield requested $1,500 for further research. An additional proposal for approximately $2,000 to edit the interview videotapes was also submitted. The overall goal for this follow-up research in the Roswell case is to raise $10,000. A fundraising campaign letter was planned for mailing to supporters by the end of the year. Contributors of $50 or more would receive a copy of the congressional briefing paper, and contributors of $100 or more would receive a copy of the videotape.

Research Proposals

Abduction Case Study: The Fund received a proposal from abduction researcher Budd Hopkins to conduct a statistical study of high-quality abduction cases. The goal is to uncover correlations and "undiscovered links" between key elements of abductions. The most comprehensive form of this proposal would cost approximately $6,000.

PTSD in Abductees Study: Dr. Leslie E. Wong of The Evergreen College in Olympia, Washington, submitted a grant proposal for $7,115 to study Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in abductees. This study would involve follow-up research on 50-60 respondents from a questionnaire-based pilot study conducted by two students.

Annual Award

The Fund made its annual cash award in memory of Isabel Davis to the recipient of the Mutual UFO Network's (MUFON) Outstanding UFOlogist Award. This year, the award was presented to Richard Hall, former acting director of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena and a current member of the Fund's Board of Directors. The award was $500.
