Article: An "Exploding" NL in Toronto

This article recounts a UFO sighting by a Mr. F.A. and his friend in Toronto on September 2, 1978. While in a 17th-floor apartment, they observed a disc-shaped, yellowish-white object with fuzzy edges that seemed to hover and then move east. The object was described as being the size of a 747 airliner. The sighting concluded with the object exploding into bright pieces. The observers reported the incident to the police and a local radio station, spending two hours trying to convince authorities they were not mistaken. The object was also reported to Toronto International Airport's Control Tower and CFB Downsview.

National UFO Information Week (NUFOIW) and Public Education

During the quarter, the FUND actively participated in National UFO Information Week (NUFOIW). This involved a national publicity campaign aimed at raising funds and promoting UFO Week. Locally, the FUND focused on public education by donating U.S. Government documents on the UFO subject to libraries. The national campaign included sending news releases to 300 media outlets, resulting in interviews with various radio stations across the country, such as WGY in Schenectady, NY; WWDC in Washington, DC; KPRC in Houston, TX; and WBAL in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Bruce Maccabee, Chairman of the FUND, was invited to speak to the Frederick, Maryland Kiwanis Club.

The public education initiative also involved sending letters to 10 local libraries, including the Library of Congress. These letters offered a speaker for NUFOIW and a free three-volume set of UFO government documents. This 'Library Set' includes three volumes previously sold by the FUND, a 28-page 'Document Companion' by Dr. Maccabee analyzing individual documents, and the formerly Top Secret Air Intelligence Report titled 'Ghost of the Estimate,' released in March. The Library of Congress received the first donated set, and other local libraries have also received them. The Library Set is available for $125.00, bound in a three-ring notebook.

MUFON Meetings

Representatives of the FUND attended the national MUFON meeting and the Massachusetts MUFON meeting. At the Massachusetts MUFON meeting, Dr. Maccabee, Fred Whiting, Larry Bryant, and Phil Reynolds represented the FUND. The two-day meeting was well-attended, with contributions from Marge Christensen and others in Mass. MUFON. The FUND had a display table where they sold documents and research papers. Dr. Maccabee was interviewed on a local Boston station and gave two impromptu talks. One talk covered recent circular depressions, or 'saucer nests,' found in England, and presented color slide photographs of unusual lights seen in Connecticut in 1981. The second talk focused on the activities of the FUND.

At Marge Christensen's request, a collection was taken up at the Mass. MUFON meeting, which, along with revenue from document sales, netted over $500 for the FUND. The bulletin expresses sincere thanks to the members of Mass. MUFON.

Networking and Research Initiatives

The COMPUFON network is reported to be 'on line,' and interested individuals are encouraged to call Michael Hart at (206) 788-5307. The FUND sent Michael Hart a message to mention when calling.

During the quarter, the Executive Committee approved a British proposal for a study of British 'phantom airships' of 1913. This proposal will be sent to the National Board for final approval. Additionally, the Executive Committee approved $1,000 for William Moore, author of 'The Roswell Incident,' to be paid upon receipt of newly-released documents and his historical analysis.

Publications and Reviews

An article notes that FATE magazine (October 1985) published a favorable review of Dr. Maccabee's paper, 'Revised UFO History.' This paper was originally presented at the 'Crashed Saucer' meeting in Washington in November 1983. The paper's perspective is that the Air Force obtained 'hardware' in July 1947, referencing the 'Roswell Incident.' The FATE review also mentions government documents and the results of psychological studies of abductees, both available through the FUND.
