Summary

Overview

This issue of SUFOI Skandinavisk UFO Information presents abstracts from UFO-NYT 1984, No. 6. It details the discontinuation of Ground Saucer Watch's UFO photo analysis due to cost and lack of conclusive evidence. A Danish sighting of a nocturnal light over Copenhagen in 1981-1982 is discussed, with the photo later identified as the star Betelgeuze affected by camera motion. The issue also touches upon the efforts of the Danish Get Acquainted Programme (IGAP) to present UFO material to statesmen, and revisits the 1967 Mount Clements UFO photo case, which was later admitted to be a hoax.

GSW Stops Working

Kim Møller Hansen reports on the discontinuation of UFO photo analysis by Ground Saucer Watch (GSW). William Spaulding of GSW confirmed this decision via personal correspondence, citing two primary reasons: the high cost of analysis and the conclusion that photographic evidence is insufficient to prove the existence of ETI visitors. GSW will continue its other activities and plans to release a final report by the end of 1984. Despite past criticisms of GSW's work, even from SUFOI, the organization expresses regret at losing the opportunity for photo analysis. SUFOI is now focusing on developing methods for digitizing and analyzing UFO photos in Denmark using computers.

Danish Photo, Nocturnal Light over Christianshavn

Kim Møller Hansen details a series of observations by Brian Johansen of a nocturnal light over Copenhagen on three occasions between December 28, 1981, and January 22, 1982, each occurring around 22:00. On January 22, Johansen captured a photograph of the phenomenon, which was published in the Danish newspaper "Politiken" on February 16th. Investigations suggest that the photo likely shows the star Betelgeuze, and any perceived motion of the object in the picture is attributed to the movement of the camera.

Fools?

Per Andersen discusses the activities of ret. major H.C. Petersen, who leads the Danish Get Acquainted Programme (IGAP). In collaboration with VonKevichzky of ICUFON, Petersen has been sending substantial amounts of UFO material to Danish and Nordic statesmen. Petersen reportedly believes strongly in Adamski's accounts of flying saucers and ETI visitors, aiming to persuade statesmen to investigate this "evidence." The "proofs" presented by IGAP are described as primarily misinterpreted quotations from prominent figures (like Schweitzer), contactees (such as Adamski and Monguzzi), and misinterpretations of astronomical objects, like Venus being sighted as a "UFO" by Carter. SUFOI clarifies that it does not dissociate itself from the belief in flying saucers but regrets that IGAP's approach may delay serious cooperation with ufologists by an estimated five years.

UFO Classic Mount Clements, Michigan, 1967

Kim Møller Hansen recounts the case of two brothers, Dan and Grant Jaroslaw, who in 1967 claimed to have photographed a UFO, described as a Daylight Disc. Their mother subsequently provided the story to the press. An officer from Selfridge Air Force Base reportedly stated it was the best he had ever seen, and Dr. Hynek commented that while he could not confirm its authenticity, he could not dismiss it as a hoax at the time. The official conclusion from Project Blue Book was "Insufficient data." However, in 1976, Hynek received a letter from the now-adult brothers admitting the photos were fakes and expressing regret. Despite this admission, the photos have reappeared as UFO evidence in a 1976 book by Brad Steiger and in a 1978 ICUFON memorandum to the UN.

Anti-gravitation and The Cosmic Conspiracy

Kim Møller Hansen reviews an article by John Schuessler from UFO-NYT 1984, No. 3, which discussed Stan Deyo and his work on "seriously" working on new energies. New information from the Australian magazine "The Skeptic" suggests that Stan Deyo may not be as serious as Schuessler portrayed. Deyo's book, "The Cosmic Conspiracy," has sold 100,000 copies, a figure deemed incomprehensible given its content.

Reviews

This section includes reviews of two books:

  • Min første bog om verdensrummet (My first book about the Universe) by Lena Stiessel, published by Gyldendal, Copenhagen, 1984.
  • Hessdalsrapporten (The Report on Hessdalen) by Jan S. Krogh, published by NIVFO, Trondheim, Norway, 1984, 120 pp.

Recurring Themes and Editorial Stance

The recurring themes in this issue revolve around the critical evaluation of UFO evidence, particularly photographic evidence, and the challenges in establishing credible research. There is a clear emphasis on distinguishing between genuine investigation and hoaxes or misinterpretations. SUFOI positions itself as a serious research organization, willing to explore UFO phenomena but critical of unsubstantiated claims and sensationalism. The magazine also highlights the importance of international cooperation in UFO research, as evidenced by the abstracts from UFO-NYT and the mention of ICUR.

It is too expensive and (2) the present results show that photos can not be used as evidence for ETI visitors.
